See the future through the rearview mirror! Experience the formerly thriving online world of Second Life in a virtual cinema. A VR film by Annie Berman.

As the sun begins to set on the once-bustling online pseudo-reality Second Life, filmmaker Annie Berman sends her avatar in to investigate the decline of this utopian world. In search of what remains, we travel through ruins that do not decay, speculative real estate developments, wide open spaces with ‘for sale’ signs, an art gallery on its last days, . . . Given the invitation to come build anything imaginable, what is it that we chose to create?

Adapted from the original 20-minute film version screened at MoMA, this VR version presents 8-mins of the film inside a virtual theater. It is followed by a 5-min Q&A with its author’s avatar.

This VR version was made possible by the MAAF, a regrant program of NYSCA, Electronic Media and Film, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NY State Legislature; administered by Wave Farm.
